How Much Does Descript Cost?
The real price of the text-based audio and video editor, plan by plan, AI credits included.
Short answer: Descript has a free plan (60 min/month, 720p with a watermark), then paid plans from $16/month on Hobbyist with annual billing ($24 monthly). The catch: the watermark and 4K only clear from the Creator plan ($24/month annually), the one most creators end up on. Pricing is per seat, and the AI runs on credits. We walk through every plan, every limit, and what you really pay for your use case.

Descript, the key numbers
What each Descript plan costs
Here are Descript's four plans. Pricing is per seat and includes a monthly pool of AI credits (Underlord) plus a quota of media hours you can transcribe each month. Prices shown are annual, the lowest; monthly costs noticeably more. The watermark clears from Hobbyist, but 4K and the full AI toolset wait for Creator.

Descript bills by credits and seats
The entry price does not tell the whole story. Three things push the bill up: 4K reserved for Creator, AI credits that run out, and seats billed one by one. Here is what each one really costs.
The watermark and 4K
The free plan exports at 720p with a watermark. To remove the watermark you need at least Hobbyist ($16), which caps at 1080p. 4K only arrives with Creator ($24/month), the real entry price for a professional finish.
AI credits (Underlord)
Studio Sound, Green Screen, Eye Contact, generative media and translation all consume credits: 400/month (Hobbyist), 800 (Creator), 1,500 (Business). Once your pool runs out, you buy top-up packs, whose exact price is not published publicly.
Extra seats
Pricing is per user. Creator scales to 3 seats and Business to 5, but every extra seat is billed separately at the plan rate. A team of 3 on Creator therefore comes to roughly $72/month annually.
Media hours
Each plan caps the hours you can transcribe or upload per month: 10 hours (Hobbyist), 30 (Creator), 40 (Business). If you produce a lot of long videos or podcasts, that quota can push you to a higher plan before you even run out of AI credits.
- Just testing? The free plan is enough, watermark aside.
- Publishing without a watermark but at 1080p? Hobbyist at $16 covers it.
- Want 4K and the full AI toolset? Aim for Creator, the real entry price.
- Working with others? Budget one billed seat per editor.
- Heavy on AI? Watch your credits to avoid buying top-ups.
How we size the real cost
Descript's headline price does not tell you what you actually pay, because it depends on both the plan AND the number of seats. For each profile, we start from the plan that genuinely unlocks what you need (4K, AI, team), on annual billing. Here is the logic behind the math.
- Watermark removedHobbyist, but capped at 1080p$16
- 4K + full AICreator, the plan you actually want$24
- Team of 33 Creator seats billed separately~$72
- Studio / brandBusiness per seat, SLA and dubbing$50
Estimates per profile. Adjust for your media hours, AI credit usage and the number of seats.
What you actually pay per month
The price hinges on output quality and how many people edit. Four typical profiles, annual billing, assumptions stated.
Estimates in USD, annual. AI credit top-ups not included.
Test / occasional
Free plan
- 60 minutes of media per month
- 720p export with a watermark
- 100 AI credits, one time only
Solo creator
4K and full AI
- Creator plan: 30 hours, 800 AI credits
- 4K with no watermark, 20+ AI tools
- That is 50% more than the entry price
Small team
3 creators
- 3 Creator seats billed separately
- 30 hours and 800 AI credits per seat
- Priced per user, not per team
Studio / brand
Top tier
- Business plan: 40 hours, 1,500 AI credits
- Brand Studio, dubbing in 30+ languages
- Priority support with an SLA
Estimates with annual billing (June 2026), per seat. Adjust for your real volume. Descript's pricing is per user: a team of 5 pays for five seats, where some tools sell a single team license. Going over your media hours or AI credits can add top-up charges.
Descript's price versus the alternatives
Descript's entry plan against other recording and video editing tools. Each targets a different job: Descript shines at text-based post-production, Riverside at studio recording, Adobe at advanced professional editing.
Entry prices checked June 2026. Different models and use cases.
Descript
Text-based editing + AI
- Free plan (60 min, watermark)
- 4K and full AI from Creator ($24)
- Priced per seat + AI credits
Riverside
Remote 4K recording
- Useful free plan (AI clips, captions)
- Best for remote podcasts and interviews
- Weaker at editing than Descript
Adobe Premiere Pro
Professional video editing
- Full pro editing + AI Enhance Speech
- Steep learning curve
- No text-based editing as smooth
Entry prices checked June 2026 on the official pages. Descript stands out for editing video by changing the transcript, where Riverside targets remote studio recording and Premiere targets pro timeline editing. For 4K and the full AI toolset, Descript's real comparison point is Creator at $24/month, not the Hobbyist entry price.
So, is Descript expensive?
Our take after testing it: the entry price is misleading, but the value is strong for the right profile. Here is when it pays off, and when it stings.
Good value if…
You edit podcasts or videos solo and want to save hours. At $24/month on Creator, text-based editing, filler-word removal and the full AI toolset replace several tools at once. For a solo creator, it is one of the best ratios on the market.
Less appealing if…
You work in a team and lean hard on the AI. Because pricing is per seat, a team of 3 on Creator hits ~$72/month, and exhausted AI credits add top-ups. In that case, a pro timeline editor like Premiere can work out cheaper per person.
The verdict
Descript is an excellent text-based audio and video editor at a fair price, as long as you pick the right plan. Take Creator if you want 4K and the AI, stay on Hobbyist if 1080p is enough, and only add seats for the people who genuinely edit.
- Pay annually: up to 33% off depending on the plan.
- Start on the free plan to validate the workflow.
- Aim for Creator if you want 4K and the full AI, no watermark.
- Only open a seat for people who genuinely edit.
- Watch your AI credits to avoid buying top-ups.
Frequently asked questions about Descript pricing
How much does Descript cost per month?
Descript starts at $16/month on the Hobbyist plan with annual billing, or $24/month monthly. But that plan caps at 1080p. The plan most creators end up on, Creator, which unlocks 4K and the full AI toolset, runs $24/month annually ($35 monthly). The Business plan climbs to $50/month annually ($65 monthly). There is also a free plan limited to 60 min/month and a 720p export with a watermark. Pricing is per seat, so a team pays the rate as many times as it has members. How much does Descript cost per year?
On annual billing, Hobbyist works out to about $192/year ($16 × 12), Creator to about $288/year and Business to about $600/year, per seat. Paying annually saves up to 33% versus monthly depending on the plan (Hobbyist -33%, Creator -31%, Business -23%). For a team, multiply by the number of seats. Always check the exact price on the official page before you pay, since tiers can change and some rates vary by region.Does Descript have a free plan?
Yes, Descript has a permanent free plan, no credit card required. It includes 60 minutes of media per month, 100 one-time AI credits, text-based editing and limited access to the AI tools. The big limit: exports come out at 720p with a Descript watermark. That is enough to test the tool and the transcript-based editing workflow, but not to publish professional video. To remove the watermark you need at least Hobbyist at $16/month annually. What is the price difference between Hobbyist, Creator and Business?
Hobbyist costs $16/month annually ($24 monthly): 10 hours of media, 400 AI credits, 1080p export with no watermark. Creator costs $24/month annually ($35 monthly): 30 hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export, 20+ AI tools and generative video. Business costs $50/month annually ($65 monthly): 40 hours, 1,500 AI credits, Brand Studio, dubbing in 30+ languages and priority support with an SLA. In short, Hobbyist removes the watermark, Creator unlocks 4K and the full AI toolset, and Business adds the team and brand features. What are AI credits and what happens when they run out?
AI credits, tied to the Underlord assistant, are consumed by features like Studio Sound, Green Screen, Eye Contact, generative media and translation. You get 400/month on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator and 1,500 on Business, plus bonuses on the paid plans. Once your monthly pool runs out, you can buy top-up packs directly in the app. The exact price of those packs is not published publicly, so confirm it on the official page. If you lean heavily on AI, this line item can push your bill beyond the plan price. Is Descript priced per user or per team?
Descript is priced per seat, so per user. The Creator plan handles up to 3 seats and Business up to 5, but every extra seat is billed separately at the plan rate. In practice, a team of 3 on Creator comes to roughly $72/month annually (3 × $24). That differs from tools that sell a single team license. If only one or two people genuinely edit, open only the seats you need rather than budgeting one for the whole team.Is Descript more expensive than Riverside?
Both sit in the same entry band: Riverside starts around $15/month and Descript at $16/month on Hobbyist annually. But they do different jobs. Riverside is built for remote studio recording, podcasts and interviews in 4K, with a genuinely useful free plan. Descript is stronger at post-production: text-based editing, filler-word removal, the full AI toolset. For 4K and AI inside Descript, the real comparison point is Creator at $24/month. If you mostly record remotely, Riverside may be enough; if you edit and repurpose, Descript takes the lead.Is there a discount for paying Descript annually?
Yes, and it is significant. Annual billing saves up to 33% depending on the plan: Hobbyist drops from $24 to $16/month (-33%), Creator from $35 to $24/month (-31%) and Business from $65 to $50/month (-23%). That is the main lever to pay less for Descript. There is no reliable recurring official promo code, however, so be wary of third-party coupon pages. The smartest move is to commit annually on the plan that truly matches your use case, without overpaying for a tier you do not use.How much does Descript cost for a team or a studio?
Because pricing is per seat, the team cost is the plan rate times the number of editors. A team of 3 on Creator comes to roughly $72/month annually, and a studio on Business to $50/month per seat, with Brand Studio, dubbing in 30+ languages, custom avatars and priority support under an SLA. Beyond that, the custom-priced Enterprise plan adds SSO/SCIM, custom AI controls and flexible licensing. Request a quote if you manage many seats or need advanced security. Can you cancel Descript easily and is the free plan enough?
Yes, you cancel the subscription from your account, with no long commitment on the monthly plans. The free plan can be enough if you only want to test text-based editing or produce short internal clips: 60 min/month is tight, and the watermark plus the 720p cap rule out professional publishing. As soon as you publish seriously, you need at least Hobbyist to remove the watermark, and Creator for 4K. Remember to export your projects and transcripts before you close your account or downgrade to free.
