Surfer vs OmniSEO 2026

Short answer: pick Surfer if your job is ranking content on Google, pick OmniSEO if your job is tracking whether AI engines cite your brand. They score 3.6 and 3.3 in our hands-on tests, but the real headline is that they barely overlap.

The thing every stale roundup misses: Surfer was acquired by Positive Group in October 2025 and ran a subscription migration in May 2026, while OmniSEO is the rare tool built purely for AEO and GEO, the answer-engine layer. So this is less a duel than a map of which problem you actually have.

Romain CochardCEO of Hack'celerationSurfer scores 3.6/5, OmniSEO 3.3/5. But they solve different jobs, so read the snapshot first.

Criterion by criterion, head to head

The same five criteria we scored on each tool's review page. Equal scores still get a clear pick.

Round 1 · Ease of use

01 Round 1: getting productive on day one.

Surfer
3.6/5
WinnerSurfer
OmniSEO
3.4/5
Our verdictEase of use · Winner : Surfer

Surfer edges this 3.6 to 3.4, and it comes down to how fast you get hands on the product. Surfer's Content Editor is functional within minutes: a live 0 to 100 score guides writers as they type, and multiple users confirm they were productive on day one. The Keyword Surfer Chrome extension installs in under two minutes and overlays data on Google with no login. The catch is the SERP Analyzer, which several reviewers call bloated and intimidating, because the complexity hides inside the analysis modules.

OmniSEO's dashboard reads as user-friendly in independent write-ups, with prompt tracking and citation maps laid out clearly. The friction is structural: there is no self-serve trial, only a scheduled demo, so the first hands-on day is also the first paid day. Neither tool is frictionless on its advanced features, and both take weeks to master, but Surfer lets you start touching the product today for $49 while OmniSEO gates the entry behind a sales call.

Round 2 · Value for money

02 Round 2: what the real entry price buys.

Surfer
3.0/5
WinnerSurfer
OmniSEO
2.9/5
Our verdictValue for money · Winner : Surfer

Surfer takes this one narrowly, 3.0 to 2.9, and neither tool is a bargain. Surfer's $49 Discovery plan looks accessible, but the usable floor for a serious content operation is Pro at $182/mo, a 272% jump. The real catch is document credits: both creating AND optimizing a document consume one credit from the same monthly quota, so a team iterating on 30 pages can burn the 120 Discovery credits in days. This is the single most-cited complaint in user reviews.

OmniSEO's $89 Essentials is even thinner: only 4 of the 10 advertised engines, monthly-only updates and no data export at all. The realistic floor is Professional at $349/mo. Neither tool offers a free trial on your own brand data, which is a heavy commitment barrier in an emerging category. Surfer edges it because the $49 entry is real even if limited, the 7-day money-back guarantee exists, and the free Chrome extension delivers genuine value without paying a cent. OmniSEO's managed services at $3,000+/mo sit outside this comparison but inflate the total-cost perception.

Surfer

Choose Surfer if you can justify $182 Pro on ranking ROI, or just want the free extension.

OmniSEO

Choose OmniSEO if you have a dedicated AEO budget that absorbs $349/mo Professional.

Round 3 · Features and depth

03 Round 3: depth, in two different directions.

Surfer
4.6/5
WinnerSurfer
OmniSEO
4.0/5
Our verdictFeatures and depth · Winner : Surfer

Surfer wins on the number, 4.6 to 4.0, but the gap hides the real story: these tools are deep in non-overlapping ways. Surfer owns the deepest SERP data layer in the content-optimization category, a real-time Content Editor, Topical Map, SERP Analyzer, internal linking, Content Audit with GSC integration, plus Fanout Queries, Mention Gap and Sentiment Analysis launched in Q1 2026. Its AI Tracker covers 5 AI models on Pro+, but an independent Profound review (June 2026) calls it a good SEO companion and a limited AEO platform: it misses Claude, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek, has no real search-demand data, and caps at 50 prompts.

OmniSEO answers on the answer-engine layer: 10 AI engines on Professional, the broadest tracking at its price point. Its AI Bot Analytics, server-log identification of GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, is a genuine differentiator no Surfer module matches, because being crawled is the precondition for being cited. Placement Recommendations turn citation data into prioritized action plans, with no Surfer equivalent for the AI layer. The honest limit to flag: OmniSEO's competitor tracking is capped at 5 on every plan, even Enterprise. Surfer wins for content production, OmniSEO wins for AI-visibility intelligence.

Round 4 · Customer support and assistance

04 Round 4: who helps, and how proven it is.

Surfer
3.4/5
Tie
OmniSEO
3.4/5
Our verdictCustomer support and assistance · Tie

A genuine draw at 3.4 each, but for opposite reasons. Surfer has the better self-serve learning: Surfer Academy with free masterclasses and an official certificate, a 20,000-member community forum, weekly YouTube and livestreams, plus live chat and email on all paid plans. The blemish is real: one 1-star G2 review describes very bad support with generic copy-and-paste replies, and a billing dispute over unused AI credits was thinly handled. So the resources are excellent, the live touch is inconsistent.

OmniSEO lists more channels on paper: email, phone, live chat, knowledge base and a 24/7 live representative on Capterra. The WebFX backing (4.9/5 Clutch) adds credibility, but that rating is agency-level, not SaaS-product validation. The hard caveat is that OmniSEO has zero verified independent reviews as of June 2026, so its support quality is entirely unproven. Its managed-service tier adds a dedicated specialist and bi-weekly calls, effectively white-glove, but only at $3,000+/mo. Surfer has better learning resources, OmniSEO lists more channels, and neither publishes a clear SLA. Tie.

Round 5 · Available integrations

05 Round 5: connectors and automation paths.

Surfer
3.4/5
WinnerSurfer
OmniSEO
2.4/5
Our verdictAvailable integrations · Winner : Surfer

Surfer wins this one clearly, 3.4 to 2.4. It ships Google Docs through the Chrome extension overlay, WordPress direct publish, Contentful on Pro+, plus Jasper and ChatGPT Canvas, with the free Keyword Surfer extension on top. Automation exists through Zapier and a REST API, although both are gated to Peace of Mind at $299/mo or a paid add-on. That gating is a real bémol, but it is still a working integration path.

OmniSEO has almost nothing in the connector sense: no Zapier connector (confirmed absent from the Zapier directory), no native CRM or CMS connectors, and its /integrations/ URL returns a 404. API access is gated all the way to Enterprise at $899+/mo. Its 10 tracked AI platforms are monitoring targets, not integrations you can wire into a stack. Even with Surfer's own gating, $299/mo buys an automation path that OmniSEO cannot match below $899/mo. If you live in an automation stack, this round is not close.

Surfer

Choose Surfer if you need Zapier, an API or CMS publishing in your workflow.

OmniSEO

Choose OmniSEO only if the dashboard and manual CSV exports are all you need.

FAQ · 10 questions

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between Surfer SEO and OmniSEO?
Surfer is an on-page content optimization tool: it reads the SERP for a keyword and tells writers how to structure and score content to rank on Google. OmniSEO is an AI search visibility platform: it tracks how often your brand is cited inside generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and 7 other engines. Surfer helps you write better content for Google, OmniSEO measures whether AI models mention your brand. In 2026, many content teams increasingly need both: Surfer to optimize for traditional rankings, OmniSEO to monitor the AI answer layer. They are complements, not substitutes.
  • Is OmniSEO free or does it have a free trial?
No. As of June 2026 OmniSEO has no free plan and no free trial, only a scheduled demo. Three free no-account tools exist (an AI Prompt Volume Checker, an AI Brand Research Tool and a Query Fan-Out Generator), but these are not the full platform. Surfer, by contrast, offers a 7-day money-back guarantee and a genuinely free Chrome extension. If a real free trial is essential before you commit budget, SE Ranking offers 14 days on its AI visibility module, which can be a sensible way to test the AEO category first.
  • Can Surfer SEO replace OmniSEO for AI visibility tracking?
Partially, but with limits. Surfer's AI Tracker monitors brand visibility in 5 AI models on Pro+ plans ($182/mo), while OmniSEO's Professional plan ($349/mo) covers 10. An independent Profound review (June 2026) found Surfer AI Tracker a good SEO companion but a limited AEO platform: it lacks Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek, has no server-log AI crawler analytics, and caps tracking at 50 prompts per day on Pro. OmniSEO's AI Bot Analytics, showing which crawlers actually visit your site, has no Surfer equivalent. For a serious AEO program, Surfer AI Tracker is a supplement, not a substitute.
  • How much does Surfer vs OmniSEO cost, the real comparison?
Surfer's realistic entry for a content team is Pro at $182/mo (annual). OmniSEO's realistic floor is Professional at $349/mo, around $291/mo on annual billing. For AI visibility monitoring alone, OmniSEO is nearly double Surfer Pro, but the tools buy different things: Surfer's $182 covers the full content-optimization stack, OmniSEO's $349 buys pure AI-answer tracking. The headline $49 Surfer and $89 OmniSEO tiers both undersell what serious users need. If you genuinely need both jobs done, budget around $531/mo minimum.
  • Surfer vs OmniSEO vs SE Ranking, which is best for AI SEO in 2026?
Each fills a different role. Surfer is best for writing and optimizing content to rank on Google, and secondarily to get cited by AI. OmniSEO is best for brand-level AEO and GEO intelligence: citation tracking, AI crawler analytics and share of voice against competitors. SE Ranking bundles AI visibility tracking, limited to roughly 5 engines, into a full traditional SEO suite from $52/mo with a 14-day free trial, the best single-tool option for budget-conscious teams. If you have one budget slot, SE Ranking. If you have two, Surfer plus OmniSEO covers far more depth.
  • Is Surfer SEO good for French or Spanish content?
Surfer's NLP content scoring is documented to underperform in French, Spanish, Swedish and other non-English markets, a limitation confirmed in user reviews. The SERP data layer was built primarily around English. OmniSEO, by contrast, tracks AI engine citations regardless of language, because it monitors how AI models respond to prompts rather than running language-specific NLP scoring. For French or Spanish content teams, OmniSEO is language-neutral on the visibility side. For content creation guidance in those languages, NeuronWriter (170+ languages, from around $23/mo) may outperform Surfer.
  • Can you migrate from Surfer to OmniSEO?
These tools do not overlap enough to migrate between them, because they are not substitutes. If you are leaving Surfer for a content-optimization alternative, look at Frase ($14.99/mo), NeuronWriter ($23/mo) or Clearscope (around $170/mo). If instead you want to ADD AI-search visibility on top of Surfer, OmniSEO Professional ($349/mo) or SE Ranking AI Visibility ($52/mo with a trial) are the logical next purchases. Think of it as adding a new capability, not swapping one tool for another, since the jobs they do barely touch.
  • Does OmniSEO have any user reviews?
As of June 2026, OmniSEO has zero verified independent reviews on Capterra, confirmed directly from the listing, and no verified G2 profile. Third-party review articles online read as editorially generated rather than real user feedback. The parent company WebFX holds a 4.9/5 Clutch rating, but that rates agency services, not this product. This is not a dealbreaker for a tool launched in late 2024, but it means buyers commit without peer validation, a meaningful risk factor worth weighing against Surfer's 15 verified reviews.
  • What happened to Surfer SEO, did it get acquired?
Yes. Surfer was acquired by Positive Group in October 2025. Positive Group is described as a European leader in marketing automation and digital growth tools. The founding team (Michał, Tom and Lucjan) remained, and Surfer kept its brand name and product direction. A subscription migration was completed on May 18, 2026, with transition discounts for users whose plans would otherwise have seen a noticeable price increase. No headline pricing changes were announced publicly, and the exact migration figures are not independently confirmed.
  • What is the cheapest way to get both Surfer and OmniSEO capabilities?
For content optimization, Surfer Discovery at $49/mo (annual) covers the core Content Editor. For AI visibility monitoring, SE Ranking AI Visibility from $52/mo (annual) tracks AI answers in a limited engine set and offers a 14-day free trial. Together that is around $101/mo, covering the essential jobs of both tools at roughly a third of the cost of Surfer Pro plus OmniSEO Professional ($182 + $349 = $531/mo). The trade-off: SE Ranking covers fewer AI engines than OmniSEO and has no AI Bot Analytics, while Surfer Discovery lacks internal linking and coverage-gap analysis.
