The Chrome extension installs in minutes and surfaces contact data live while browsing a LinkedIn profile, one-click to reveal email and phone, zero workflow configuration required. One G2 reviewer explicitly contrasted RocketReach with HubSpot, calling it refreshingly simple. For a solo rep who needs data fast without building anything, the friction is genuinely close to zero.

Clay's Airtable-style table interface is a different beast. It takes 5-6 hours of real experimentation before advanced waterfalls click, and the dual-credit system (Data Credits vs Actions) is unintuitive at first. The word "overwhelming" appears in at least four of Clay's 15 G2 reviews. The bémol for RocketReach: once you push it beyond basic lookups, the interface becomes inconsistent and the CRM sync has a known flaw of overwriting company names rather than appending data. Clay, once learned, is described as "Excel on steroids" and the table-by-table debug flow is genuinely powerful. But day one goes to RocketReach.

The headline per-lookup cost of $0.25-0.33 looks reasonable until you factor in the documented 20-30% bounce rate: the true cost per deliverable email rises to $0.35-0.64. There are also two separate credit pools (Lookup Credits and Export Credits) that do not substitute for each other, so power users hit export caps mid-month with lookups still remaining. And across multiple 2026 Trustpilot reviews, users describe auto-renewal charges with no reminder and refunds refused outright, including at least two users who filed complaints with the FTC and California AG.

Clay's March 2026 pricing overhaul changed the math substantially. Data costs dropped 50-90%, failed lookups are no longer charged, and the Growth plan ($495/month) now includes bidirectional CRM sync and REST API that previously required the $800/month Pro plan. The March 2026 overhaul added the dual-meter credit system, Web Intent signals, Ads product integration and the Claygent AI agent, which performs custom web research from job listings, press releases and LinkedIn activity using models including GPT-4 and Claude Opus. None of that exists in RocketReach.

RocketReach's feature set is not trivial: the database breadth (700M+ profiles, 35M companies) is real, and 2026 additions include Autopilot AI list-building (Sep 2024), Intent Data on Ultimate, and multi-step Sequences (Feb 2026). The honest note: RocketReach is itself one of Clay's 150+ data providers, which tells you something about the two tools' relative positions in the stack. Clay offers 2-4 hour chat response on paid plans, Loom video walkthroughs for complex issues, a 15k+ Slack community with active founder engagement, and Clay University with 700+ workflow templates. Our own support interactions were resolved within a business day. The one legitimate complaint across Clay's 15 reviews is that BYOK credit handling is not always transparent, which is a real issue worth watching but categorically different from billing disputes.

RocketReach's support on billing is the single most dangerous aspect of the product. A rep named "Samantha" is cited in two separate 1-star Trustpilot reviews for refusing to reverse charges and refusing to escalate. One user reports being told no one at the company would discuss a $165 billing dispute. The 150+ native data-provider integrations plus bidirectional CRM sync (Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics 365, Pipedrive), Salesloft, Outreach, Apollo, Instantly and Lemlist connectors, REST API and webhooks on the Growth plan, and a BYOK model for maximum flexibility form an integration surface that RocketReach simply cannot match. We pushed 300 enriched leads from a Clay table into Salesforce with custom field mapping in under 10 minutes, bidirectional, without data corruption.

RocketReach covers Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive (Pro and above), Outreach.io, Salesloft, Zapier and Make, with API access on Ultimate only. The integration layer has a documented quality issue: the CRM sync skips duplicate checks and overwrites existing company names rather than appending data, which pushed at least one reviewed team to disable it entirely. The bémol for Clay is BYOK complexity: activating Hunter, Clearbit or Lusha inside Clay may require separate subscriptions on top of the plan fee.
